Chriss Dettmer
Interview by Jeff Zuck
|
So the beauty of a tall mug of Beaners Best and the feeling of riding on a glass tricycle seat brings us to this special
occasion. Life’s offerings mixed as they may, now brought to us from the cesspooliage of men and women alike, rising high
from this comes few. If luck had it’s part to play in this symphony then God, the captain, conductor , (or what have you), would
surely quit. Some natural born seekers gift us with the vigor of vision inspiration and the thoughts of new possibilities while
the rest lay dormant and soulless. In a state of high paced evolution and a relatively short-lived existence, tattooing is a puzzle
and our style and art are the pieces. Finding a place to fit in is not always easy or attainable. But every so often a shining gem
bears it’s uniquely foul essence and out there comes the shitfuck...
I had the fortunate opportunity to meet, interview, work and introduce
the world’s best beer to one of such shitfuck. Chriss Dettmer seems to
have what it takes to bring something new to the table and at the same
time conserve what is most important, tradition, respect, and a bunch
of other really cool shit that you should already know. So without further
hesitation, here’s how the interview went.
How old are you and how long have
you been tattooing?
Chriss Dettmer: I’m 28 right now and I started seven
years ago. The first two years were kind of chaotic
because the guy that taught me tattooing just
left for good after one month of apprenticeship
and I stood there with all the equipment and no
clue what the fuck I’m doing there, so it took
quite a long time to figure out how it all works.
Where did you start?
That was in my hometown, Luebeck and
I spent my first five years of tattooing there. A
friend of mine, Elvis from Hamburg took care
of me and helped me out with knowledge and
appointments. After that I was very lucky to work
with one of the most respectable people, in my
opinion, Carlos Hierro-nin (a.k.a. Iron). a comic
drawer, sarcastic mastermind and very good
friend...and Spanish.
Where do you tattoo now?
I left Carlos’ shop after 3 years and went to Hamburg, where
I am now at Tattoo-Nouveau a shop with a nice reputation and
a good history of Hamburg tattooing even though it’s not in the
harbour or near the reeperbahn.
